An ongoing work in progress, Poire William.

Rigoberto Castellon, a long time Dumbarton Oaks gardener, has attached a clear glass bottle to a budding Kieffer pear tree so that the pear will grow inside of it.   It is placed  upside down to prevent rains from going in.  The bottle will be detached later with its pear ripened inside in the fall and filled with brandy.

The Kieffer pear is one of many that make up the aerial hedge surrounding Arbor Terrace. These pears are pruned in February to train the shape. The ripened pears are also a favorite snack of our squirrel population.
